Protection of Animals
Geoffrey Beene is passionate about protecting animals. We proudly support our canine friends with the creation of Project Heal, launched in 2009 through contributions to ECAD (East Coast Assistance Dogs). ECAD is truly a one-of-a-kind program, working to protect at-risk kids through Children's Village residential school program, teaching them necessary life-skills, and simultaneously supporting our disabled veterans. The kids train the dogs in teams, for up to two years, in over 80 commands, to enable them to provide live-in assistance for the veterans. The kids then train the veterans on handling the dogs. It is a wonderful win-win situation for all involved, providing the kids with education, confidence and the unconditional love of animals, and providing the veterans with a hard-earned thank you for their dedicated service. We are so pleased that Geoffrey Beene's support of Project Heal has paved the path for additional, generous contributions from a variety of benefactors.
ECAD Program Part 1
Geoffrey Beene has donated $20 million collectively to the Animal Medical Center (Manhattan) and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. This generous gift to the care and protection of animals is supported fully by the Geoffrey Beene brand.
Geoffrey Beene's $10 million Estate gift helped the ASPCA achieve the following:
- Complete the expansion and renovation of its state-of-the-art Adoption Center in New York City which can house up to 350 dogs and cats on any given day
- Provide free spay/neuter to over 12,000 dogs and cats in New York City's neediest communities
- Administer close to $2.5 million in free veterinary care to animals in need at Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in New York City
- Investigate over 4,000 cases of animal cruelty in New York City resulting in over 100 arrests and the seizure of nearly 300 animals
- Assist law enforcement across the country in the prosecution of 30 cases of animal cruelty
- Launch ASPCA Partnership - a program through which the ASPCA fosters collaboration amongst animal welfare groups in selected communities and provides them with funding, staff, expertise and other resources to increase the number of animals leaving their sheltering systems alive
- Share our expertise with more than 10,000 professionals through lectures and workshops on topics such as recognizing and responding to animal cruelty, shelter management, spay/neuter, shelter medicine, and veterinary toxicology
- Advise on over 116,000 animal poisoning cases, helping to save over 84,000 animals
Geoffrey Beene's $10 million Estate gift helped the AMC to remain a leader in veterinary medicine by continuing their valued community services:
- Compassionate community programs for pet owners facing financial hardship through the SAVE and PAF programs
- Significant upgrades to the Critical Care and Emergency Services departments at The Elmer and Mamdouha Bobst Hospital
- Acquisition of cutting-edge ForceTriad Energy Platform and accompanying instruments to enhance Minimally Invasive Surgery
- Offering Interventional Radiology, a new mode of therapy which utilizes advanced imaging techniques
- Integration of new comprehensive, evaluative and validated pain management program into all patient examinations, more effectively recognizing, identifying, and treating each animal's pain
- Installation of state-of-the-art linear accelerator (LINAC), providing veterinarians (both at The AMC, and the Donaldson-Atwood Cancer Clinic) with the most advanced technology to treat animals with cancer
- The most recent addition to the Community Funds, the Buddy Fund, provides full or partial subsidies for the treatment of cancer in animals
- Installation of new high-field MRI at the Department of Diagnostic Imaging, the only one of its kind to be used in veterinary medicine
- Innovative research at the Caspary Research Institute to further stimulate knowledge which strengthens the human-animal bond - by allowing beloved pets to live longer, healthier lives
