Presented by GEOFFREY BEENE GIVES BACK®, Rock S.O.S™ is an ongoing philanthropic campaign created by the Geoffrey Beene Foundation to:
The original, six-page RSOS campaign was launched in June, 2009 in GQ Magazine. A spin-off, one-page PSA ran in an August issue of The New Yorker, as well as the September issues of Vogue, Vanity Fair, Architectural Digest, GQ and Golf Digest.
The Rock Stars of Science visit to the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. on September 24, 2009 was a resounding success! Watch as the worlds of rock and research collide - for where else does Joe Perry of Aerosmith come together with some of the country's top scientific researchers to rock-out and rattle some historical chandeliers?
In a town that's notoriously hard to impress, the Rock Stars of Science concert really hit its mark. Members of the House and Senate, along with Congressional staffers, converged at the Capitol Visitor's Center to witness this unprecedented event:
As you can see from Perry's jam session with Dr. Francis Collins, Head of the NIH, and Dr. Rudy Tanzi, Kennedy Professor of Neuroscience at Harvard and pioneering AD gene hunter, the connection between music and science is a no-brainer.
The Rock S.O.S shoot was filled with high energy and good vibes.
In addition to Aerosmith co-founder, Joe Perry, Rock Stars of Science brings together a novel mash-up of Rock Legends and Rock Docs to spread the Rock S.O.S Mission, including will.ilam, Seal, Josh Groban and Sheryl Crow, with one of the first mappers of the human genome (Dr. Francis Collins), a leader in genomics research (Dr. Eric Topol), an architect of breakthrough treatments to manage HIV (Dr. Anthony Fauci), and researchers leading global fights against pandemics like cancer (Dr. David Agus) and Alzheimer's (Dr. Jeffrey Cummings, Dr. Steven DeKosky, Dr. Sam Gandy, Dr. Ron Petersen, Dr. Dale Schenk, and Dr. Rudy Tanzi). The Washington, D.C. event was moderated by Terry Moran of ABC's Nightline, and included panel discussions and interviews. RESEARCH!AMERICA and Stand Up To Cancer, two organizations who promote advocacy and alliance in health care, were excellent partners in our D.C. adventure.
Dr. Rudy Tanzi, featured on keyboard and harmonica with Perry, articulates the grave importance of continuing the RSOS undertaking.
Media coverage of the event was off the charts with 88 million media impressions. Even CNN got in on the action:
Tom Hutton, the Trustee & CEO of the Geoffrey Beene Foundation, was honored this year by Research!America with their prestigious, annual Isadore Rosenfeld Award for Impact on Public Opinion, for his groundbreaking leadership on the Rock Stars of Science campaign.
